3 Things That Determine Your Tan Shade

With Spring fast approaching, now is the best time to get tanned. Whether you choose to tan your body through indoor tanning beds, or out in the sun, you need to know the factors that determine your tan shade.

First of all, you need to know that each individual, including yourself, has unique skin and this plays a crucial part in determining how dark your skin will get in the sun or in a tanning bed. You may have probably noticed this but some people almost immediately start burning in the sun while others rarely burn.

This is usually due to melanin in the skin, a pigment that is responsible for tanning. It is found in the skin, hair, and even your eyes. Similarly, people who have lighter skin shades have less melanin in their skin and they may burn or turn red in the sun or a bed easily. And people with darker skin who have more melanin get darker easily when they attempt to tan. However, darker-skinned people still have the risk of getting a sunburn.

The key is to use the right skincare products along with a good tanning lotion. Here’s what you need to do to get the perfect tan without burning, turning red, or experiencing streaks.

Use Sunscreen With SPF 30

  • This is very important especially if you are going to tan in the sun. Wear a sunscreen with UV protection of at least 30 SPF. And if you are using a tanning lotion, make sure that it contains sun protection of some sort.

Make sure to apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you go into the sun. A sunscreen with 30 SPF is pretty strong, strong enough to block harmful levels of UVA and UVB rays but also at the same time it isn’t so strong to stop you from getting a good tan. So make sure to always cover your entire body with sunscreen.

 Choose The Time Carefully

  • If you are going to go outside in the sun, then you need to pick the time when the sun isn’t at its strongest. Typically, the sun is at its strongest around the afternoon till 3 PM. You have to avoid the sun at this time because it will do the most damage to your skin.

If you have fair skin, it is best to sit in the sun during the morning period or the period after 3 PM to avoid getting burned.

Pick the Right Tanning Lotion

  • Tanning lotions are available in many different forms. Before you pick one, you need to make sure it contains the right ingredients, good sun protection, and DHA. A high-quality tanning lotion almost always contains all the good stuff your skin needs to get a great tan.
