How to Get the Perfect Tan – Our Guide

Having a glowing, tan skin is a dream come true for many people. While you can go outside and bathe in the sun, you need to remember the harm UV rays can do to your skin. This is where a self-tanner comes in. With a good product and proper application, you can achieve a healthy tan that you have been chasing after.

However, getting a flawless and natural-looking tan with self-tanner is not as easy as may seem, and most people end up with streaks and blotches all over their skin after applying self-tan. By following these tips below, you can finally achieve a perfect tan without streaks!

Prep the Skin By Exfoliating

It is imperative that you prep your skin well before applying self-tan. Exfoliate your skin in the shower with a face cloth to remove dead skin cells from your body and face. Then, apply an AHA or BHA exfoliant on your dry skin. AHA is suitable for those with normal to dry skin with sun damage, whereas BHA is best for people with normal to oily skin. It is highly recommended that you do this a few days before applying the self-tanner. Do this every day leading up to the date you plan to use the self-tanner.

Shave One Day Before

Instead of shaving right before you apply the self-tanner, you should shave the day before. This will help prevent small droplets of self-tanner from clogging in the pores, or more specifically, follicles, where you have shaved off the hair. Also, do not shave after applying self-tanner either, as this will make you lose your tan sooner.

Apply Day and Night Cream

Make sure that you apply day cream, night cream, or lotion on the skin, especially on areas of the skin where dead skin cells tend to accumulate, such as ankles, knees, and elbows. By moisturizing these dry areas, it will keep them from soaking up more self-tanner than other parts of the body. This means that you can get an even tan without blotches.

Give It Time

Self-tanners can take a few hours to develop the final color. Therefore, you should take the time to study your skin and make sure that you have not missed any areas. Before you put on clothes or go to bed, be sure to wait at least fifteen minutes so that your clothes and bedding will not get stained.

Wash Your Hands

The last thing you want is to have orange hands. Make sure that you wash your hands with soap as frequently as you can after applying the self-tanner. It is also a good idea to apply lotion on the inside of your wrists and hands as these areas are in constant with the self-tanner as you apply it. Alternatively, you can wear gloves for extra protection as well.

Make It Look Natural

If you want to achieve a natural-looking tan, then you need to create a convincing color on your skin. For areas that are rarely exposed to the sun such as the inside of your arms, you can apply a diluted layer of self-tanner to these areas. Also, pay attention to areas that absorb most of the color of self-tanner as these will turn the darkest. Some people may find that their legs often turn darkest, while for others, it could be the face. After you are aware of how your skin reacts, you will be able to adjust your self-tanning application accordingly and achieve the perfect tan of your dreams.
