Should You Shower After Tanning?

You want to have gorgeous tanned skin. You’re doing everything right. You exfoliate your skin before tanning. You know that going into the tanning bed without tanning lotions means you’re not making the most out of your tanning session, so you always have lotion on. You even use moisturizer after your tanning session is over! This is because you know that moist skin holds a tan better and the tan lasts longer. But then what? Should you shower after tanning?

Shower After Tanning: Do’s and Don’ts

You love that beautifully bronzed skin you get after tanning. This is why you want to do everything you can to maintain your gorgeous tan and keep it from fading away. The question is: does showering help your tan or hurt it?

Do… shower before tanning

Starting your day with a shower is ideal. This will serve to clean and moisturize your skin with water, getting you ready for your tanning session later in the day. A nice hot shower will open up your pores and prepare your body for the session to come!

Do… shower a few hours after your tanning session

While showering doesn’t wash away a tan, it can still have a negative impact on maintaining your fresh golden glow. After several hours, about 5 or 6, you can then shower once again and clean off any excess chemical agents on the skin. Everything will have set by then, and you will have maximized the impact of your tanning session.

Do… wait longer if you used a bronzer

You have several great options in tanning lotions with bronzer, like the California Tan De.Fine Bronzer and Designer Skin Miss Designer 55 X Bronzer. If you use a bronzer during your tanning session, it is even more essential to wait several befores before you shower.  Bronzers mixed in with the tanning bed lotion are designed to increase melanin production to result in darker tans. Washing away your bronzer and lotion immediately after tanning will reduce their effectiveness. Your tan may not turn out as dark as it would have otherwise.

Don’t… shave your legs

Shaving doesn’t just take off the hair; it removes the thin top layer of skin too. That’s what you just worked so hard to tan! If you need to shave your legs, do so before you tan instead of afterwards. Wait at least 12 hours after tanning to shave.

Hopefully, this answers your question. There are many things that a person can do in order to get the most out of their tanning experience. This includes using high-quality lotions with bronzers, adding a moisturizer to your daily routine, and keeping your skin hydrated. Don’t avoid showering, just be smart about when and how you shower. By following this advice, you’re sure to achieve the dark tan you’re looking for!
